Apple Removes VLC Media Player from the App Store

Two months ago, we told you that there were a licensing issue between the creators of the open-source VLC platform and creators of the VLC iOS application. Now Apple has removed the application from their App Store. One of the developers of VLC for iOS has announced that on their blog:

At last, Apple has removed VLC media player from its application store. Thus the incompatibility between the GNU General Public License and the AppStore terms of use is resolved - the hard way. I am not going to pity the owners of iDevices, and not even the MobileVLC developers who doubtless wasted a lot of their time. This end should not have come to a surprise to anyone.

Textfree App Now Available for Computers ! Send Free Text Messages Now !

This is just in, Pinger has released their Textfree app for computers. As all you know, Textfree is a free app in the app store that lets you send free text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G. This is a great app for anyone that doesn't want to pay for texting when they have a good data plan to use text on!

Even though this has just been released, the interface looks similar to the TextFree application on the iOS devices. Textfree for the computer doesn' really have as many features as I suspected, but it is in the early stages and will most likely improve.

Skyfire, a web browser that runs flash content on your iPhone or iPod touch is really coming to the iPad soon. The browser has been demonstrated in a video can be found after the jump.

According to Wired, the Skyfire iPad app will carry some new features in addition to its core function (i.e. playing porn videos, nah, I meant flash videos). Skyfire works by transcoding Flash video into HTML5 so it’s playable on Apple’s iOS, which doesn’t normally support Flash. Prevent the App Store From Closing After Downloads using StayOpened [Jailbreak Tweak]

Are you tired of the App Store closing everytime you download an app? It becomes a real pain when you need to download multiple apps, right? Well now you can prevent it from closing with a new Cydia tweak called StayOpened.

StayOpened is basically a tweak that allows you to prevent the App Store from closing. This is extremely useful when you're trying to download multiple apps at the same time. Opening and closing the App Store is always so annoying. Why not just download all your apps at once and just close our when you want to?
Once you download StayOpened, you can toggle it from the settings app on your iDevice and you can also change the the text of the downlad button in the App Store as shown above (Ftw :D!). StayedOpened is a free tweak and is available via the ModMyi repository.

iBooks VS. Google's Newly Released Google Books

Couple of days back, Google announced their new eBook app release of Google Books. This app allows you to read eBooks off your iOS device just the same as Apple's iBooks. It also lets you buy books from a store. So whats the difference between iBooks and Google Books? Which is the better one?

Even though Google Books has been a new app that has just been released, it lacks the graphics and animation interface in the app. For instance, in iBooks, the animation makes it seem as if a bookstore is behind those shelves of books you bought. In Google Books, it directs you to a safari page where you can buy books.

Even though the animation in Google Books is lacking, it's programming is very well done. Google is said to have the the greatest collecions of books.
Another thing about Google Books is that feature of unlimited storage in a digital cloud. This allows you to save all your eBooks onto Google Account. What's good about this is that you can read all your books online from the app without downloading them. You an also read them online from Google's book site.

The one major thing about Google Books is iTunes syncing. For now, iBooks is the only app that can seamlessly sync into iTunes, but it lacks reading iTunes.
In conclusion, Google Books seems like the better option here if you're on the go and if you rarely ever sync with iTunes. Google Books provides so many features, but if you're that type of person who likes to stick with iTunes and also have a nice interface to deal with, stick to iBooks. Google Books should probably release some updates in the near future. Besides, it's only their first release.

Viber for iPhone Brings FREE Unlimited Phone Calls to Rival Skype's App

Skype developers should worry starting from now as it has new competition on the iPhone platform thanks to Viber, a new VoIP app that allows you to make unlimited free calls to other iPhone users over Wifi and 3G connections. The app is totally free, runs in the background without draining your battery, doesn’t have any ads and won’t charge you anything to make calls.

Everyone who have an iPhone should go ahead and install this app right now. When you install Viber on your iPhone, the app syncs your device’s contact list and shows you which of your friends are also using Viber so you can make free calls to them from your iPhone, regardless of the model you use, no user registration required (not as Skype!).

Viber uses Apple’s push notifications to receive calls even when closed, by clicking “Answer” on the resulting alert opens the app and connects the call.

Here's other good news TechCrunch reporting for Android users, the company is currently working on developing a similar app for Android users and aims to release it in the first quarter of 2011. Viber will also introduce free text messaging between its users the same as HeyWire.

What're you waiting for? Just head over app store (iTunes link), install it then tell your friends to do the same. I doubt I’ll be using Skype for iPhone again. Anyone else will go with me?

This App Turns Your iPhone into a Radar Gun [REVIEW]

SpeedClock is a new app available in the app store that turns your iPhone into radar gun. Even though SpeedClock may be a useful tool, there could also be an accuracy issue in the app because of the estimation of distance the user must estimate. There is also possibly a greater accuracy issue for the iPhone 3GS becuase it doesnt have the gyroscope feature like the 4th Generation iDevices.

Despite SpeedClock's accuracy issue, in time it is probably going to improve and expand on it's goal. Here is the information from the developers of SpeedClock gave us from the press conference:
Employing the device’s three-axis gyro and basic trigonometry establishes distance. Speed and laps are measured using the motion sensing of the video camera, timing the interval between the object entering and leaving the frame. The app is compatible with iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4.
Speed Clock also has many other features including a speedometer, a timer, and a distance tool. The speedometer feature is basically meaasuring the speed of a moving object. It basically uses the camera to capture the speed of the moving object. Fortunately, this app comes with settings to set what speed to record it in and also the sensitivity according to your surroundings which improves the accuracy.
Another feature included in Speedclock is the timer. The timer also uses a motion sensor to detect when you start. This is extremely useful for anyone that takes track or any other activity that requires to job laps.
The last tool in SpeedClock is the distance tool. This helps the user know how much to stand back when using the speedometer feature. The app basically measures the iDevice's angle it is held in and the view it is seeing. This helps to determine how much of the scene the iDevice is viewing and how far away. This can then be used with the speedometer feature.
In conclusion, this app is extremely useful. Even though there could be some accuracy distortion, this app is brilliant for a brand new release. For just $0.99, this is definitely worth the investment!
